Discovering the Natural Charm of Coban Jahe

When it comes to nature tourism in Malang, *Coban Jahe* is a must-visit destination. This tall waterfall pours down in a single powerful stream, surrounded by dense trees and wild bushes. Despite its name, there’s no actual ginger (“jahe” in Indonesian) to be found in the area — the name comes from a local historical tale.

Behind the somber story, visitors will find a peaceful natural retreat. Activities such as camping, outbound games, and enjoying local food in the forest atmosphere are highlights for anyone coming here.

###Coban Jahe Opening Hours###

Coban Jahe welcomes visitors daily. From Monday to Saturday, the waterfall is open from **8 AM to 4 PM**, while on Sundays, it closes slightly later at **5 PM**.

For those interested in **camping overnight**, the area is accessible **24 hours**, but prior permission from the management is required.

###Entrance Fee Information###

Admission is very affordable. Children under 5 years old can enter for **free**, while visitors aged 5 and above pay only **

**IDR 5,000

Additional parking fees apply: **IDR 2,000** for motorcycles and **IDR 5,000** for cars.

### Breathtaking Natural Beauty

Standing at 45 meters tall, Coban Jahe’s waterfall is both majestic and soothing. A single stream of crystal-clear water plunges into a natural pool below, creating a refreshing splash and cool mist.

The water is clean and clear, perfect for wading or playing near the pool. The surroundings are filled with wild greenery and climbing plants that wrap around rocky cliffs. The sound of the waterfall adds a relaxing rhythm to the environment.

###A Unique Café Above the River###

One of the unique features of Coban Jahe is an **outdoor café** built **directly over a flowing stream**. Tables and chairs are placed right on the riverbed, so visitors can enjoy their meal with their feet dipped in cool, flowing water.

The calm forest ambiance, combined with the refreshing water, makes this a truly memorable dining experience — both peaceful and photogenic.

### Instagrammable Photo Spots###

Coban Jahe is full of scenic views and photo-worthy locations. A **viewing deck** allows visitors to pose with the waterfall in the background, far enough for a clear and undisturbed shot. It’s decorated with a heart-shaped frame, adding a romantic touch.

Another popular spot is a **floating bamboo platform** placed on the surface of the water. Guests can stand in the middle to take beautiful pictures with the waterfall right behind them.

### A Hidden Cave for the Adventurous

For thrill-seekers, Coban Jahe also has a hidden cave on the upper right side of the waterfall. However, this **narrow cave** is **not open to the public** and is only accessible to **trained professionals with proper equipment**, due to the tight entrance and confined spaces inside.

###Fun Outdoor Activities###

Visitors can engage in various fun activities at Coban Jahe, such as:

1. Swimming in the natural waterfall pool

2. Rafting in the nearby river

3. Outbound games and group challenges

4. Camping in designated areas

Exploring a treehouse, specially built for a unique experience

All of these activities offer the chance to enjoy nature in exciting and relaxing ways.

### The Sad Origin of “Coban Jahe”

Despite its name, Coban Jahe is unrelated to the ginger plant. The name is derived from the Javanese word *“pejahe”*, meaning “the dead” or “those who have passed away.”

During the Dutch colonial era, **38 Indonesian freedom fighters** took refuge in this area. Sadly, they were discovered and shot from above the cliff by Dutch soldiers. All of them perished in the attack. This tragic event inspired the name “Coban Jahe.”

These fallen heroes were later buried at a Heroes’ Cemetery** located about 500 meters before the entrance to the waterfall. A **memorial monument** called *“Tugu Makam Kali Jahe”* marks the site.

Location and How to Get There

Coban Jahe is located at **Jl. Begawan, Dusun Krajan, Taji Village**, in **Jabung District, Malang Regency**. It is around **24 kilometers** fr

Soaking in the Waterfall

Lion-faced rocks at Coban Kethak waterfall.

The Coban Kethak waterfall originates from the Lanang River, which flows through the Kediri region. Its height reaches approximately 25 meters. One unique feature sets this waterfall apart from others and is a major draw for visitors. This uniqueness lies in the rock formation at the top of the waterfall, which resembles a lion's face. The water flowing from above resembles the lion's thick mane or hair. Because of this resemblance, the waterfall is also known as Coban Singo Edan or Grojogan Singo.

This name is closely associated with the identity of the people of Malang, known as Aremania, with the lion's head as a symbol of pride. Although the water flow is not particularly large, visitors are not permitted to bathe directly under the waterfall. Activities permitted are limited to playing in the water, such as dipping one's feet or posing in the shallow stream for photos with the waterfall as a backdrop.

Delicious durian culinary tour, typical of the region

Along the way to the location, you will find many durian fruit sellers.

Besides its natural beauty, Coban Kethak also offers the experience of tasting fresh durian sold by local residents. The Charm of Waterfall Views

The Rainbow waterfall/coban Malang tourist area.

To reach the waterfall, tourists need to trek approximately 1 kilometer from the entrance. Along the way, visitors should exercise extreme caution, as the path is quite steep and can be slippery, especially during the rainy season. One of the attractions along this route is the distinctive bamboo bridge of Coban Pelangi, which serves not only as a crossing but also as a popular photo spot.

About 50 meters from the waterfall, visitors are allowed to play in the water and enjoy the refreshing flow of the river. However, swimming is prohibited near the waterfall due to the strong currents, which can endanger visitors. The management has also installed warning signs to prevent any untoward incidents.

Beyond simply enjoying the beauty of the waterfall, visitors can also experience the thrill of camping in the Coban Pelangi area. The tubing location is in a small river that flows around the waterfall area. For just IDR 5,000 per person, visitors can experience the thrill of navigating the river. Unlike whitewater rafting, which is done in groups on rubber boats, tubing is done individually. However, to maintain stability and avoid being swept away by the current, participants usually hold onto each other while navigating the river. This activity is perfect for those who enjoy water activities but want something relaxing and fun.

Exciting Rafting at Coban Pelangi

For those who enjoy challenging activities, rafting can be an attractive option when visiting Coban Pelangi. This activity involves navigating the river in a rubber boat on a special river channel separate from the tubing route. Rafting trips typically last around 30 minutes. It's ideal for beginners who want to experience the thrill of conquering river currents. There's a separate fee for rafting, but the rates are still quite affordable. A boat can usually accommodate four to five participants. This activity not only tests your adrenaline but is also fun to do with friends or family.

Enjoying the Beauty of the Rainbow

Coban Pelangi Waterfall offers a unique sight rarely seen elsewhere: a rainbow appearing around the waterfall. This phenomenon occurs due to the refraction of sunlight hitting water droplets suspended in the air. To see the rainbow more clearly, the best time to visit is between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sunlight is strongest. The dry season is the best time to visit, as the weather tends to be sunny and conducive to the formation of rainbows around the waterfall.

Coban Glothak Tourism

 Try Coban Glotak

Photo of the waterfall tourist location from a distance

Location : Jalan Raya Coban Glotak, Dalisodo, Wagir, Malang, East Java, Indonesia, 65158

Malang is famous for its many beautiful waterfalls, such as Coban Glotak. This waterfall has only one stream, unlike Tumpak Sewu, which has several. However, the beauty of this waterfall lies in its height, reaching tens of meters. Furthermore, its location in the middle of the forest makes it very natural. Many tourists are willing to come here, even if they have to enter the forest. Although not too far from Malang City, access is not easy. The natural beauty of this place is a unique attraction for tourists, even those who travel on difficult routes.

Walking in the Waterfall Area

The story behind Coban Glotak's name is as interesting as its name. Locals say the place is called "Glotak" because of the sound of the waterfall. The water rushing over the rocks produces a loud booming sound. In Javanese, this sound is often called "glotak glotak" (chattering).

That is why this waterfall is known as Coban Glotak.
However, when tourists are at the waterfall, they usually hear the roar of rushing water. They may not hear the splashing of water hitting the rocks. This could be because the rock beneath the waterfall has been eroded, forming a pool.

The Trail to Coban Glotak

For those with an adventurous spirit, Coban Glotak is an ideal destination. The hike to the waterfall is quite long, but that doesn't stop adventurers from reaching it. The views are truly breathtaking. One minor challenge on the journey is the rocky and dirt path. To reach the destination, tourists need to maintain good physical fitness. They sometimes have to cross a fast-flowing river. Although not deep, the current is strong enough to flow gracefully between the rocks. Even during the day, the weather is not too hot, as the forest remains quite shady. Preparing your belongings is crucial, as there are not many vendors near the waterfall. To navigate the watery and slippery forest terrain, always wear comfortable clothing and waterproof, non-slip footwear.

Swimming and Enjoying the Freshness of the Natural Waterfall

Upon arriving at the waterfall, take a moment to enjoy the cool water. Tourists can swim in the pool just a few meters in front of the waterfall. There's a small, shallow area where people often sit and relax. The water is not only refreshing but also calming, flowing gently from the waterfall into the river.
Sitting on the rocks and soaking in the pool is very enjoyable.
The serenity of the pool makes swimming more relaxing and enjoyable. You can also listen to the sound of the water trickling over the rocks. If you don't want to sit in the pool, you can still soak your feet in it.

What else can you do except take photos? Tourists often use the waterfall as a great opportunity to take pictures. The view is amazing, and the nearby forests and rivers are just as beautiful.

If you're lucky, you might see a beautiful rainbow under the waterfall.  A soft, colorful arc appears between the falls. You can even capture a clear photo of this rainbow.

Beautiful Rainbow Under the Waterfall
Beautiful Rainbow Under the Waterfall

Coban Glotak boasts a powerful waterfall. It reaches 80 meters in height, dropping from the summit into the pool below. The sound of the waterfall is so loud and cacophonous, it attracts anyone who wants to get closer. The waterfall appears incredibly white due to the force of the water.

Once you reach the pool and it flows into the river, the water appears clear and clean. In the pool below the waterfall, the water still appears to be rushing. Visitors should avoid standing directly under the waterfall, as contact with the water can be quite painful. If you want to play in the water, you can do so in the pool or river a few meters in front of the waterfall.

The waterfall's walls are made of rock, initially black, and visible when wet. However, on the side where the waterfall flows, the water appears green due to the moss that clings to it. On the other side, you can also see vines and shrubs covering the water's surface. The combination of white water and greenery creates a vibrant appearance.

Trekking Challenge to Coban Glotak

The travel to Coban Glotak requires caution. From the stopping zone, guests must explore a reasonably challenging way and slip carefully. A few slows down offering nutrition and drinks are found along the path. Caution is vital when exploring the earth way and crossing unguarded cliffs. On more extreme and dangerous segments, the administration has introduced ropes and security railings to ease the travel. After crossing this way, guests will reach a waterway with clear water. Use caution when venturing on the rocks to avoid slipping. Upon entry at the waterfall, the magnificence of Coban Glotak is quickly clear, making all your endeavors beneficial.

Walking in the Waterfall Area

If you want to relax for a moment, you can enjoy a walk near the waterfall. There's a hill in front of the waterfall where you can sit and enjoy the food and drinks you brought from home. Enjoying your meal while taking in the view of the waterfall and the cool weather is certainly enjoyable.

What else can you do but take photos? Tourists can use the waterfall as a photo opportunity. The scenery is breathtaking, and the surrounding forests and rivers are no less captivating.

If you're lucky, you might even witness a beautiful rainbow beneath the waterfall. A faint, mejikuhibiniu-colored arc is etched between the waterfalls. You can even take a clear photo of this rainbow.
